Amy Lee: Educators In The Instruction Of Music and Leaders in Evanescence Merchandise

As part of Grammy Soundchecks, multi Grammy Award winning band Evanescence, recently gave 25 High School kids from South El Monte High School in Los Angeles a glimpse into the realities of the music industry and a behind the scenes feel for what actually goes into putting on a successful concert.

The group not is only a leader in teaching music, but Amy Lee leads in top sales with Evanescence merch. With a unique experience of seeing a special rehearsal by Evanescence, followed by an interactive Q & A discussion, the students were also allowed to stay for the concert, which took place at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles. The Grammy Foundation has held these Grammy Soundchecks at various cities across the country and South El Monte High was chosen by the Los Angeles Chapter of The Recording Academy to engage in conversation with Amy and the band about a multitude of topics regarding the music industry.

We caught up with Amy Lee and Terry Balsamo of Evanescence to get their thoughts on participating in yet another Grammy Soundcheck on this tour and being teachers in the school of rock.

"The Grammy kids actually are really, really interested in every aspect of the music and they all had some really cool questions. It's been something that we've all really liked. We've done it this tour for the first time. Kids come to a few different cities and it's been really fun. Our lighting guy, our sound guy and our manager have all gotten in on answering a few questions once in awhile. I don't know. It's fun. It's cool, I feel like we're teachers in the school of rock."

Having sold nearly 15 million albums worldwide and with already two Grammy Awards to their credit, Evanescence are currently touring in support of their latest release, 'The Open Door' which debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart and it reached Platinum status in just over a month. Since the albums release the band has performed for over a million fans in more than 25 countries around the world including Israel, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Greece, and Spain. Other artists who have participated in the Grammy Soundchecks in the past have been Coldplay, The Dave Matthews Band, Destiny's Child, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, U2, Kanye West and Mary J Blige.

After Facing Big Bad Wolf, Amy Lee Faces Herself In Evanescence Clip
Watch out, Nirvana: Lee's 'Lithium' could be even more depressing.

Amy Lee is returning to the forest, only this time there's no Big Bad Wolf.

"There's the me in all white and it's really wintry," the Evanescence singer said on the set of the "Lithium" video on Wednesday, pointing to an elaborate array of snow-covered trees. "And then there's the all-in-black Amy under the surface of the water of this lake in the forest. So it's the happiness and the sorrow and we're almost singing to each other, trying to figure out how both of us can work."

Unlike the Little Red Riding Hood concept for the "Call Me When You're Sober" video, which was an abstract take on somewhat literal lyrics, the follow-up is a literal take on somewhat abstract lyrics.

"So it's not so in-your-face to make the video more literal," Lee justified of the video, which Paul Fedor (Sarah McLachlan, Seether) directed based on her concept. "Really, though, I think it's all about touching somebody and I hope it does that."

"Lithium," the second single from the recently released The Open Door, is about making the choice between the comfort of sorrow and the idea of happiness.

"You get in these cycles where you're stuck in bad situations or relationships or whatever and it's hard to make yourself get out even though it's negative and hard," Lee explained. "So that's sort of what it's about, breaking free."

She chose the title "Lithium," which is also the name of a classic Nirvana song, because it's "a metaphor for happiness from a negative point of view." "It's looking at it like, 'I don't want to numb myself and not feel anymore,' " added Lee, adorned in an elegant white dress, pale white makeup and bright red lipstick.

Evanescence decided to release "Lithium" only recently, as Lee struggled with the single-selection process.

"It was a really, really hard call because there were like four different songs I thought would be awesome for the second single," she explained. "But I think we got a couple [more] singles to go."

"Call Me When You're Sober," which Evanescence also shot in Hollywood, has been a "TRL" hit, and The Open Door followed accordingly, debuting atop the Billboard albums chart
